From Lyle Baird ... [e-mail addy]
"A bit of trivia you might be interested in -- When we were trying to design a ship's patch, the XO ran a little contest to get ideas. We also sent a request to Walt Disney for any ideas he might have. We received three or four designs, of which we liked some features in each. One had a shark, one had a submarine, and one had the submarine with teeth. We liked the last one best, but not the background. We finally decided on a combination. I cut out the one with teeth and superimposed it on the background we liked and that is the design we sent to the patch makers."

The Shark's patch was one of the last aggressive characterizations permitted by the US Navy. After this time patches were always either passive or technological in nature.
